Fast Track Your Job Search (and Career!) by Richard Kirby
Obviously I am a little prejudiced, but I also have had an opportunity to read a larger number of career books and compare them. I wrote this book as an all-in-one resource designed to help career seekers better understand how the job market actually operates in the 21st century. It starts with fundamentals and moves on to all the topics that you need to master so you can take control of your career and guide it to your desired destinations. Included are detailed chapters on assessments to identify options, networking to identify unpublished jobs and help others, and strategic preparations for job interviews. The current version is available as an eBook (no hard copies or audio book at this time) at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com for a nominal price. This is the best investment you can make in your career, assuming you do not have the resources to engage a quality career coach.
Here’s an audio blog taken from some of the content in the first chapter…

What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter
The first chapter in my book addresses the importance of your attitude. Every day you not only display your attitude to others.. you also feed it back to yourself. Improving your attitude will improve your career and life results!
Assuming you are paying attention from time to time to what you are saying, especially your internal dialogue, then this book will help you “tune in” better to some of your dysfunctional self-talk and replace it with positive, supportive talk.
.
The Success Principles by Jack Canfield
The second chapter in my book addresses the importance of identifying and removing/reframing your self-limiting beliefs. Everyone has them. Some are minor, but not all of them. Once you start paying attention to your external and internal speech, if you try you will notice that some of the negative parts may be generated from negative judgements or beliefs about yourself.
As the phenomenally successful co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books that sold tens of millions of copies says in this book, “Moving beyond your limiting beliefs is a critical first step toward becoming successful.” Even if you have been successful already, shedding your remaining limiting beliefs can take you even higher!

Supernetworking by Michael Salmon
The twelfth chapter in my book addresses the importance of networking strategy and skills. In my experience, most (90% or more) people are ineffective networkers. While this may not be affecting you much in your daily life, it can greatly slow down your results in your career overall (within your existing company/practice)… and definitely during any necessary job searches and major career changes.
The vast majority of jobs are found through networking, not job boards and applications. Argue if you like, but it’s true. And since the majority of the BETTER jobs are found through networking you can definitely reduce your career stress and produce better income and job satisfaction by becoming a superior business networker. Although there are a variety of parts of this book that I do not agree with, there are lots of great examples of specific language you can customize to your specific situation and needs.

The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris
The seventeeth chapter in my book addresses career options such as self-employment. And this book can offer you a mind-bending perspective on opting out of traditional paths by thinking differently. I read this book many years ago and it gave me one of those major “paradigm shifts” people talk about but seldom experience.
In this New York Times best seller one of my favorite quotes is “Just because you are embarrassed to admit that you’re still living the consequences of bad decisions made 5, 10, or 20 years ago shouldn’t stop you from making good decisions now.” Amen.
